A beautiful Saturday afternoon ushered in Australia Day at Central Park in New York City this past weekend. The self described “boutique festival” showcased a handful of up and coming Australian acts to an eager, Aussie flag waving crowd.

The music kicked off with singer/songwriter George Byrne, who treated the still filing-in audience to songs from his 2011 self-titled record and more from his catalog. Up next came the beautiful falsetto-acoustic tunes of High Highs. Jack Milas, Oli Change and the rest of the band seemed to have everybody mesmerized through the seemingly short set including tracks from their debut EP as well as new material that will be released in the near future.

DJ Ashley Feraude, accompanied by acclaimed trumpeter Jonty Hall, had all of Rumsey Playfield moving or singing along in between sets with hip hop and dance classics, both Aussie and non-Aussie. Feraude also provided backup for the MC of the day Maya Jupiter. Clad in all white, the Mexican-born-Australian-bred Jupiter ran through a couple of her cuts from her already legendary decade-plus career in addition to introducing the performers. We only wish that she performed for longer.

In a chain of introductions, Jupiter brought out legendary Australian promoter Michael Chugg to introduce Sheppard. The Brisbane sextet includes siblings Emma, Amy and George Sheppard, and provided what was definitely the most energetic and poppy set of the day. George and Amy sing, while Emma thumps away on the bass. They danced through a host of material from the band’s new self titled EP including the hilarious “I’m Not A Whore”.

After Sheppard was done, the audience had swelled for the headliners, Melbourne’s Husky. The sweet sounds of frontman Husky Gawenda, keyboardist Gideon Preiss, bassist Evan Tweedie and drummer Luke Collins reverberated between crowd members as they played songs from their album Forever So. Husky brought a quiet, but beautiful end to the Aussie showcase while graffiti artist Kid Zoom put the finishing touches on a piece of art he had been working on throughout the day as the bands played. For all of those in attendance, it was a great day of Aussie pride, music, food and drink. Here’s looking forward to next year.
