Most singer-songwriters write about love and heartbreak. It’s the kind of music that you listen to during those love-torn moments that help you wallow in your misery.

Then there’s Kate Miller-Heidke. Her songs are about elements of love, life, and heartbreak, just like any other singer-songwriter. Only with her, you’re more likely to hear lyrics about the lament of having your heart ripped to shreds, only to wake up one day to find the perpetrator’s friend request on Facebook. In fact, the song that deals with that – “Are you F*cking Kidding Me” – also known as The Facebook Song, has amassed almost 1.5 million hits on Youtube – and it’s a shaky version of the song recorded live in Melbourne.

With that in mind, we were lucky enough to be present during her New York City residency at Rockwood Music Hall on the Lower East Side. The residency spanned three gigs and there were as many equal parts to each: part-music show, part comic-cabaret act,  and mostly felt like an intimate conversation with a super-talented, super-funny friend. While storytelling is not uncommon for musicians, Miller-Heidke seems to be able to do it with a resounding mix of comedy and quirk – a particular favourite was an anecdote about being asked to play at 2010′s World Expo in Shanghai. After playing her song choice, “Politics in Space,” in front of a small group of delegates before the event, she received a note pushed under her room door. In it was written a “fervent desire that you reconsider song choice for tomorrow.”

She’s a classically trained musician who just doesn’t take herself to seriously – and it’s best personified in the recent success of her side-project (with husband and collaborator,  Keir Nuttall), called “Fatty Gets a Stylist.” Those living in New York will recognise one of their songs in an instant – the catchy “Are You Ready?” played on TV excessively by the New York Lottery in their latest ad campaign.

In the USA, the “Fatty” album, Liberty Bell, was released as Kate Miller-Heidke’s third solo album, and is now available through Amazon and all good CD retailers.

The exciting news for those who would like to catch Miller-Heidke in action is that she’ll be opening for Ben Folds Five on their upcoming tour of the USA. Tickets are currently on sale, and currently announced dates are below.
