Greta Gertler and Adam D. Gold are The Universal Thump

Greta Gertler and Adam D. Gold form The Universal Thump, an orchestral pop band with roots in Sydney, New South Wales and Brooklyn, New York.

Greta Gertler’s been busy. Ever since she co-wrote a few songs with The Whitlam’s Tim Freedman (including their hit, ‘Blow Up the Pokies’), she’s divided her time between New York City and her hometown, Sydney, Australia working as a musician and songwriter.

More recently, she’s teamed up with multi-instrumentalist Adam D. Gold to form The Universal Thump, a bright, cheery Orchestral Pop outfit who’s latest self-titled double-album was released on September 1. The record, based on a quote from Moby Dick and 4 years in the making, is enjoying a month-long release celebration in New York City this month and the band will tour the rest of the country this fall (dates below).

For the uninitiated out there, Orchestral Pop is, as the name suggests, part orchestra and part pop. It’s an indie genre that’s gained popularity in the last decade (notably with The Polyphonic Spree and the arrangements of Sufjan Stephens), with little surprise – the combination of layered instrumentals with usually soft-sweet vocals make every song a complete aural delight. The Universal Thump takes that concept to new heights, including a growing collection of  some 60 members – notably Tanya Donnelly (Throwing Muses, Belly), Jonathan Maron (Groove Collective), Roy Nathanson (Jazz Passengers) and Oren Bloedow (Elysian Fields).

The Thump’s reception in both the USA and Australia has won them some critical acclaim – with feature articles in the Sydney Morning Herald, a debut on ABC’s Radio National and radio station Triple R in Melbourne. Their music video for ‘Flora’ aired on ABC TV’s ‘Rage’. Now that they’re back in the US, their album release shows were featured in The New Yorker.

The month-long October residency at the famed Living Room in NYC will take place in four chapters, with one section of the album played at each show. Amid an oceanic backdrop, the band will include 2 drummers, strings, horns, keyboards and guest vocalists – many of whom played on the album. Tickets for the New York Shows are free, and details for the rest of the US tour can be found below.
