We’re happy little AussieMites indeed.

As the case for an Aussie-made, home-grown product expands in Australia, one family-owned company has decided to take matters into their own hands, creating a refined, gluten-free, rich-tasting yeast extract called AussieMite. And, most importantly, it’s 100% Australian made and owned.

According to a piece on news.com.au, the product has been in the works – and the recipe refined – over the course of a decade. They’re calling it “the caviar of savoury spreads,” and the main idea is to get the word out that the owner of the Vegemite brand is Kraft Foods, a US-based corporate giant in the food industry.

Unfortunately for AussieMite, however, is the fact that a new product from Dick Smith, called OzEmite, has also just hit Aussie supermarket shelves. According to a spokesperson from Dick Smith, however, the real enemy is Kraft Foods.

“We don’t want to take away from AussieMite,” Dick Smith Foods national Sales manager Eddie Bray said. “We hope Roger Ramsey prospers and grows on the noise that Dick Smith makes.

“We want to take sales away from Vegemite.”

We’ve heard mixed reviews about the original AussieMite product, but nothing as of yet about the updated version. Have you got an experience about any of the yeast extract spreads to add? Have your say in the comments below.
