New Music Monday: The Mootekkis

The Mootekkis are a Tokyo based rock ‘n’ roll band fronted by Melbourne-born singer Mike Hannah. Hannah’s band mates include American Jude Conlon on guitars and Japanese born and bred Koji Iwatay, also on guitars, Tomoaki Sekiwa on bass and Masafumi Sugiyama on drums. They play fast rock music and they’re damn good at it.

The Mootekkis were formed in 2008, apparently over several rounds of drinks. Hannah has described the band’s music as “a loose-canon, boozed-up, bare-bones approach to rock.” The references don’t stop there, as their bio boasts that the members rely on their instruments and the linguistic-enhancing powers of beer to communicate. Throw the new single and possible roadhouse anthem “The Whiskey” into the mix, and you’ve got yourself a sweaty and decadent party and brotherhood.

A self-titled 6-song EP was released in 2010 and is currently available on iTunes, as is their latest single “Milky Way”, which was released late last month. The band came out on top of a nationwide battle of the bands contest resulting in a cover story in Japanzine, a leading Japanese nightlife and entertainment publication. They are flying from Japan and landing in New York City next week and have some shows in New York and Connecticut which you can find below as well as the party hard video for “Hey..What You Want?” from the EP. Definitely check out this ragtag group of international misfits. We know we will!
